Antorini, Cervaro della Sala, 2014

Italy · Umbria
This is an incredible wine made by Antinori's estate in Umbria that specialises in elegant and fine wines. Complex like Puligny and just as scarce.

This estate takes its name from the family who owned it in the 14th century, the Mondaleschi della Cervara. The estate, in Umbria, was bought by Antinori in 1940 and was at first used as a summer residence and a supply of grapes to bolster their other wines. The first vintage of Cervaro as we know it today was not until the 1985 vintage and has since won almost every major award in its category. A blend of Chardonnay and 10% Grechetto, the wine shows balance from the freshness of the later-picked and stainless steel fermented Grechetto, and richness from the barrel-fermented and oak-aged Chardonnay. It really is a wonderfully rich and expressive wine that defies many of the opinions we may have about Umbrian quality. It is only a shame to see that not more wineries are trying to copy this delicious example.
