Bodega Colomé
Legend has it that the world-renowned American winemaker and winery owner, Donald Hess, was eating in Argentina and was served a Malbec like he had never had before. When he tried to find out information about the wine, all he could be told was that it came not from Mendoza, but from Salta. Three years of searching led him to this winery that was established in 1831. Happy at last that he had found the source if the mystery wine, he did what he thought was fair, and bought the winery! It is a phenomenal winery that has vineyards planted from 6-10,000 feet, as well as some parcels of vines that are 160 years old. With these parameters, the grapes ripen so fully and with such dark skins that a whole new approach to making the wines is possible and much less oak is used here than anywhere else in Argentina, allowing for the flavour and character of the grapes to shine through.
