In the 1920s Domenico Bottega was a catch-all drinks specialist in the north of Italy. A barman and wine maker, he had a particular expertise in the dark art of making Grappa. Generations passed and with a distillery under their arm a winery was sure to follow. Perhaps their experience in the left-field led them not to a regular winery but to making Prosecco in 1992. This was the catalyst to success and, as they had been the first distiller to put Grappa in hand-blown bottles, they were the first people to put Prosecco in hand-painted Gold bottles. Their success has led to opening of bars all over the place - even on a cruise ship - and the acquisition of wineries across Italy from Valpolicella to Montalcino. Even with this success, the Prosecco under it all is very good indeed.
