Callia is a fascinating project that gives outstanding wines from one of Argentina's less-prominent regions: San Juan towards the north of Argentina. This proximity to the equator and the increased altitude provide grapes with more ripeness from heat during the day, as well as thicker skins from the cool temperatures at night. Their speciality in the winery is interestingly Shiraz, but the native Malbec grows so well here that the temptation to make a fine example like this was too good to turn down. From three different vineyard areas, this Malbec bears the hallmarks of the grape with flavours of red and dark fruit, a smooth texture and a chocolate-coffee spice from the special terroir in which the grapes are grown.
