The wines from Navarra have been overlooked for most of the history of Spanish wines. The more famous Rioja and Ribera del duero have out-muscled this region with whom they share many more similarities than differences. The region sits adjoining the north-eastern border of Rioja and again, the dominant grape variety is Tempranillo. Indeed, in the particular area in which this wine is made, producers have historically been able to use both of the Rioja and Navarra DOCs as the boundaries were initially drawn up by different bodies and in the end, consensus allowed a certain area to have this special dispensation. This means that the Manzanos family who own Eneriz, can farm in Navarra and call it Rioja and vice-versa, should they wish. However, their intentions are to show the land and territory as individual, character-led plots able to produce clear and distinct wines. This then is slightly fresher in acidity than their Riojas but also has great concentration and weight to allow for the oak aging to be carried without being overpowering. The result is excellent wine and stunning value. We look forward to more vintages to come.
