Louis Roderer
Champagne Louis Roederer has a very long and well-established history that has seen an amazing amount of dealings with all of the major European royal courts - in particular the houses of the Russian Tsars. It was Alexander the second who commissioned the Reims house to make him a super-Champagne that came in a clear bottle - so that he could see there was no poison - and with a flat bottom - so that no bomb could be hidden under the punt. This challenge was difficulty in the 1870s but Roederer comissioned a Flemish glass maker who could only produce such a design using crystal and a very heavy bottom on the bottle. It's been called Cristal ever since and to this day still bears the crest and seal of the Russian royal household. The vines for Roederer's wines are amongst the best in Champagne and the grapes for it come from the best parcels. The rest of the grapes are still outstanding and this their Brut Imperial is a fabulous use of terroir and winery skill. Creamy in the mouth with a fine balance and endless finish this is a very good value way to get the quality into your glass.
