Chateau d'Arsac
For a wine that has become one of our most popular and consistent Bordeaux offerings, not to mention the most accessible from Margaux, d'Arsac has had a very potted history over the last 100 years to say the least. Established as a noble estate as long as 900 years ago, it was the largest producer of grapes in the Medoc right up until the end of the 19th Century. However, with Phylloxera and world crises at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, fortunes waned and it was abandoned in the mid-1930s to the extent that under Nazi occupation the Chateau was used as a hen-house! It was bought by the current owners in 1986 and an extensive refurbishment of the house and vines began. The house, wines and estate now fully fitting the appellation and history that we have come to appreciate. Interestingly, when the Maraux appellation was being created in 1954, d'Arsac wasn't included and it was only after the refurbishment that it entered the commune's list. Now it is a wine that is sought out every vintage and understandably - Cabernet and Merlot producing an excellent wine that has all the structure, perfume and finesse associated with the commune.
