Château Malfard is a property like so many others in Bordeaux, whose roots were established in the mid-18th-Century. Located in the North Libourne district of Bordeaux, it borders the prestigious territories of Fronsac, Pomerol and Saint Emilion. The vineyard area covers a clay-limestone plateau in the foothills of the valley of the Isle River, a tributary of the Dordogne, which was historically used as a canal to move the wines from the Chateau to the port of Bordeaux. The Chateau’s current vineyard area covers 16 hectares planted in one continuous plot around the Chateau. Its orientation is North-South and almost all of the plants are red. Remarkably, the clay soil has a substructure running under the vines, which is more than 8 meters thick! This causes the vines to root themselves to immense depths in order to find nourishment and nutrients – a process that gives outstanding quality grapes, especially in this organic estate.
