Dog Point
Dog Point vineyards were established by the two families farming there, the Healys and the Sutherlands. Famous for being the first suppliers of grapes to Cloudy Bay, they stopped providing them in the early 2000s and, setting out alone, became very much one of the most exciting and talked about new wineries in New Zealand. Small plots and careful management led them to harvest exceptional fruit and then into the winery where their understanding of the vineyards and grapes allowed them to produce brilliant wines. These are able to age: even the Sauvignon Blanc develops elegantly with age, but the really exciting wines are the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - these age like Burgundies. This Chardonnay really is a fine substitute for Burgundy and, as with fine wines from the USA or Australia, belongs to a cohort of excellence for this grape. Pricey, but worth every penny.
