Finca La Emperatriz
This estate in Rioja has a fascinating history and wines from it were first seen in public at the 1878 Paris exhibition where the owner of most of these vines, the Empress of France, showcased the wines. The recent ownership of the winery saw it bought in 1996 and renamed to reflect its one-time owner. Made up of a number of small parcels of vines over 101 hectares of vines, this is a thoroughly quality-conscious and modern winery that has highly-rated wines coming out every year. Situated at the furthest north-westerly point of the DOC of Rioja Alta, the winery is on the highest plateau there is and makes wines that necessitate huge care and attention. For all this, they remain remarkably affordable.
