Angelo Gaja is one of the most awarded and respected winemakers in Italian history. His home in Piemonte is the base from where he has masterminded some of the world's most sought-after wines in the Barbaresco and Barolo communes. So sure are his hands in making wines that people instantly love, he has often taken to breaking commune laws that render his wines illegible for the commune status: no issue, they still have an indefatigable following. When the first of the Super-Tuscan wines hit the market and began making inroads into the commercially lucrative fine wine markets, Gaja thought about planting vines in the region, though it was so many miles from his base in Piemonte. Of the three sites he wanted to purchase, two were already taken by Sassicaia and Ornellaia, so he had to be content with one. Clearly able to understand what he was looking for in terroir, he has planted grapes from the Bordeaux recipe as well as Syrah and Sangiovese, and in the process, made wines that are incredibly approachable, fruit-forward and textured, smooth, and soft. These really are wines that excite and fascinate, as they come from a winemaker more used to the elegance and finesse of Nebbiolo than the seductive power of these wines. They are some of our favourites and we often recommend this Promis as a guaranteed way to put a smile on the drinker's face!
