Gran Cerdo, Tempranillo, 2014

Spain · Rioja
A serious wine with seriously un-serious roots: this declassified Rioja is gorgeous, fruity, and great with food. An homage to narrow-minded bankers.

Gonzalo Gonzalo
One of the reasons that Gonzal Gonzalo is an interesting winemaker is that he eschews the modern wine style of large bodegas and their dependence on the effects of new Oak. He believes that there is ample quality and terroir in the soil and grapes alone, and proves it by using natural winemaking and organic methods in the vineyards. There is fruit and character in plentiful abundance. The joke is on the bottle - denied a loan by bankers, Gonzalo got money from his friends and family together to turn-out the wine he believed in. What he decided to do was call the wine after the bankers, but not directly: Gran Cerdo means Big Pig.
