Herdade do Rocim
Pedro Ribero is a gentleman and a seriously talented winemaker. He was Luis Duarte's assistant in Herdade dos Grous, taking that winery to wonderful heights, before being requested to move to the brand new and fully modern winery built by his mother and father-in-law. The winery is spectacular, complete with all mod-cons, including air-conditioned fermentation and maturation tanks, and is set deep into the rocks in the hill above the town of Cuba. From here, Pedro has continued his learning and study - the winemaking students in local universities are able to test and revisit the vines of hundreds of different varieties that he has planted at the front of the winery, to see just how they can rescind to the Alentejo's particular climate and soils. The wines he makes are also fine - balanced and smooth, yet restrained to maintain regional character and to celebrate the natural freshness that comes from their high altitude vineyards. This red is from the entry range and what an entry it is - juicy, smooth and great with food, it makes a very compelling case to try more wines from this great region.
