Herdade dos Grous
This property was set up for by a German firm who wanted to provide an incentive location for high-achieving employees. Set around a nature reserve that is home to storks (Grous in Portuguese), there is a secluded hotel and fantastic restaurant with amazing panoramic views to boot. When they came to looking at a wine element, they turned to local hero Luis Duarte and essentially gave him the keys to do whatever he wanted. And here he has made some outstanding wines that are amongst the best in the country. Part of Luis' success has been in the way he uses Alicante Bouschet (which is one of the very, very few varieties in the word with red skins and red juice). This variety can often be limp and uninspiring, but he has managed it on an altogether different scale so that rich, lush, vibrant and textured wines are being made in each of the properties where he grows it. Another part of his success is that he simply knows his land and varieties so well that there are very few chances that the style he is looking for are ever far from the resulting wines.
