Herdade dos Grous
Herdade dos Grous is an extraordinary winery, hotel, golf course and nature reserve. Built from scratch to fit all of these purposes, the only things that are authentically old are the Grous themselves, who are a species of giant stork. The winery was designed in purpose by Luis Duarte and his input into the vineyard was vital. Essentially he has complete control over the winery and uses it as a brilliant and premium vehicle for his winemaking skills, which are, of course, many. This is a delicious wine that is so different from many other commonly-drunk styles. It is round and smooth but has balancing acidity and a natural freshness that means that the weight of the wine and the smooth delivery of tropical flavours is never out of balance with the overall feel. There is a Reserva version that is even more powerful and uses barrique aging, but that is somthing else...
