This ancient region was growing Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Sangiovese long before the Banda was created to mark out the zone of Carmignano in 1716 by Cosimo de Medici the Third. These days the small town is bypassed by the motorway and the traffic routes head for Florence, Sienna, Pisa or other more famous sport, but Carmignano remains and still produces extraordinary wines from its ancient soils. The vines are all, almost paradoxically, south-facing, but on a north-facing hill. What happens is that as the hill slopes north, undulations create sub-hills on the slope that all, naturally, face south. Such was the understanding in the 17th and 18th centuries, that the growers of the time were able to plant there (and only there) and create wines that were famous enough for the royal families to squabble over and, eventually, protect.
There are not nearly as many wineries in the region as there were in post-Renaissance Tuscany, but our friends Dario and Enrico have been making exquisite, complex and elegant wines that are soil-focused and truly reflect the terroir and the climate of the region, so that we can continue to live through history in the modern era.
