Mariana, Vinho Branco, 2015

Portugal · Alentejo
A beautiful wine that shows the potential from Alentejo for whites. This is crisp but broadly fleshy and balanced, with a delightful, fruity finish.

The Herdade do Rocim is a winery in Cuba in the higher altitude region of the Alentejo. This allows the winemaker, Pedro Ribeiro, to harvest fruit that has great ripeness as well as balancing acidity. The warm days create full grapes and it is the cool temperatures that come from higher altitude night times that maintain the acid levels. These factors give the winery a greater scope for invention and dynamism than many others in the region so that they can develop a wine style uniquely their own. In this regard, it is interesting as Pedro had been the assistant winemaker with Luis Duarte in Herdade dos Grous and now has quite an individual style at Rocim. This white is bright and fresh with tropical notes on the nose, delivering a rounder palate with a refreshing citrus twang - it really is balanced and engaging, which is quite an achievement at this price point.
