Weingut Max Ferd. Richter
The quite extraordinary history of German wine is itself made up of a number of incredible individual family histories. One such is that of a family who bought parcels of vines in the village of Brauneberg in 1643, forty-two years before J. S. Bach was born. The Richters then began trading in wine from about 1680 when they established a company of the same name as exists today. A Staggering nine generations later, the company is now a winery and is in the same family hands under Dr. Dirk Max Ferd Richter. The tenth generation is waiting in the wings already. With 48 acres of vines at an average of 40 years old, the Richters farm 98% Riesling and 2% Pinot Blanc; their belief that quality of wine is made in the vines has led them to a reputation that is as high as any other; passion and quality that necessitates hand-harvesting, low levels of fining or filtration and almost entirely natural yeasts for fermentation. The wines live for an amazingly long time, aging gracefully and elegantly. This wine is their QBA Riesling that is made in an off-dry style to replicate that which was fashionable when they made wines to be consumed on the first tourist airship trips. The label was taken from designs by the Bauhaus artist Hans Schloesser.
