One of the most classic and respected of Portuguese wines, Pegos Claros was once a part of the Companhia das Quintas group that was a co-operative set up under the dictator Salazaar in the 1930s. As a positive, the winery received the best of grapes from the small region of Palmela - on the Setubal peninsula - and was able to develop a wine that had all the potential to age and impress comparatively to many other international wine styles. Trying older vintages of this wine is a real treat! The current owners bought the winery at the end of the first decade of the 21st century and have modernised the whole production to produce smooth, bright, fruity and approachable wines that can be drunk almost from the time they are bottled. What's interesting though, is that there are still the hallmarks of the region, terroir and the unusual but fantastic Castelao grape variety. This is a gorgeous wine that has deservedly come to be recognised as one of Portugal's standard bearers.
