Pio Cesare
Pio Cesare are one of the only producers to still have their winery in the small town of Alba. Built over many stories in the same ancient building, there is something traditional and traditionalist about this decision that seems to inform all of their wines too. Yet in 2003 they looked to the highly-rated and critically acclaimed Bordeaux winemaker, consultant and lecturer, Denis Dubordieu, to assist in their approach and since then, the results have been sensational and anything but traditionalist. Their traditions are intact, however, regarding old contracts with long-standing suppliers, excellent fruit and attention to detail. The new winemaking input from Dubordieu (who sadly died in 2016) saw vitality, elegance and body brought back into these wines and the critics and customers alike, fell in love with these wonderful monuments of Piemontese winemaking all over again. This Barolo, their flagship wine, is a broad, dense and brooding red that is concentrated and full of blackberry, cherry, rose and spice characters. It promises to live for many more years in spite of its approachability in this, its relative youth.
