Quinta do Lixa, Alvarinho, Pouco Comum, 2014

Portugal · Minho
Alvarinho is often a bit fuller than Albarino and this is a very fine example. Balanced with roundness and freshness, it is great with fish.

Quinta do Lixa are specialists in the production of wine in the Vinho Verde region in the very north of Portugal. This large expanse of area grows grapes almost in spite of the natural conditions. However, they are able to ripen some of these grape varieties in southern pockets of land and this wine is an example of that - it is the same variety as Albarino but sucks up more sun and ripens more fully in this part of Portugal. This gives a wine that is fruitier and softer, and whilst it has some similar flavours, they are all relaxed and softened somewhat. A lovely wine that is smooth as well as refreshing - perfectly balanced.
