Santa Margherita
Description
Santa Margherita are a very interesting winery based just north of Venice. Their wines have caught the imagination of their customers for many years, largely as a result of their producing the first ever 'white' Pinot Grigio. The grapes growing on Pinot Grigio vines are usually a combination of many colours: it is a mutation variety of the Pinot Noir family that has any number of colour compounds still in the skins of the grapes, which means that at harvest you can expect to see pink, grey, orange, gold, yellow and green grapes, all on the same bunch. What this means then is that the natural winemaking process will give a wine with an elegant pink hue to it, rather than the white that we are sued to today. The white version was created by Santa Margheritat when they thought that they could sell it better than the pink version - how right they were!
