Stephane Ogier
Stephane Ogier is one of the most talented winemakers in the northern Rhone, which means he's one of the best in the world. With a pallete of only two grape varieties, he is able to make an extraordinary range of wines that show terroir, varietal character and microclimate to the very finest detail in the very finest of wines. Based in Ampuis, his vineyards are located in the appellations of Hermitage and Cote-Rotie as well as a number of other sites, many of which have no identifiable village or name. This means that he is able to use them as test cases and experimental grounds to develop his understanding of the potential for each of the varieties he uses, chiefly Syrah and Viognier, but can also blend in further varieties, just because the mood might take him. In this wine, the Syrah is pure, plum-focussed and mouth-watering in its freshness. With cherry notes and a subtle spice character, it is as though he has allowed us to taste the pure essence of his finest wines in their infant stages.
