Thistledown is a wine project in Australia that began as a quest to make wines that people in Europe would enjoy drinking without necessarily thinking that they were drinking Australian wine. Using specially selected plots of vines that have often been neglected and forgotten, the team of Peter Leske, Fergal Tynan and Giles Cooke, make wonderfully expressive wines that are paradoxically European in style and yet true to their Australian roots. This Grenache is powerful and intense, but because of the variety used and because of their respectful use of oak, it is smooth and easy to drink, with the high alcohol is kept in perfect balance because of the natural acidity in the soil and grapes. It really is that good.
